Valais: Freethinkers continue to fight
Government member Frédéric Favre's double role in the Holy Valais Million vor the Vatican
The Government of the Canton Valais decided to donate a million Francs for the new barracks in the Vatican. This has led to criticism. Also of State Councillor Favre. Will the decision still be reversed?
The article by Thomas Jossen in today's edition of the Valais Messenger offers insight into the problematic ties that have led to further criticism. Our president Andreas Kyriacou is quoted: "I give the Lucerne government council credit for recognising that the donation is not a contribution to the public good. That's why a decree was needed and consequently a parliamentary debate with a ruling. This made the decision also eligible for a referendum." The rest of the story is well known: The Freethinkers Association collected signatures, entered the referendum campaign and triumphed.
Valentin Abgottspon promises us: we will not let go. "Unfortunately, as stated in the article, it has been set up by various Valais institutions as a "behind the scenes" thing. Everything else is blocked and even the office of the Grand Council remains opaque. "Vaticanton Valais", as he once called it in an older column of his.
But in Valais, it is not only about the Vatican barracks: on 27 November, an important poll is scheduled on the law on palliative care and the regulatory framework for assisted suicide in institutions and facilities. Moreover, there is the total revision of the constitution of the Canton of Valais, which we are keeping an eye on.
